Activities of the Foundation

At the present time, the activities of the Blandair Foundation are restricted to those of its Division of Wildlife Research and Land Management.

The Division of Wildlife Research and Land Management

As more farmland and other rural areas are converted into residential and commercial developments, citizens are feeling a need to live in harmony with nature, and often open space is provided in the development plans. Even in established urban areas, there are parks as well as newly-provided open space arising from urban renewal. However, often government departments and citizens do not know how to manage open space effectively to protect the environment and to encourage a variety of wildlife.

There are many issues of managing suburban and urban open spaces that need to be investigated. For example, what are the "best management practices" for the enjoyment of birds and other wildlife in urban areas? How can habitats be managed or created economically to provide and make viewable species of special interest? How can effective storm water management facilities be constructed to provide wildlife habitat while improving water quality? How can existing species be retained in rural or natural areas despite residential or commercial use of those areas? What are humane and effective ways of reducing the numbers in species that are overpopulated? How can the popular practice of attracting wild birds by feeding them be improved?

The Division of Wildlife Research and Land Management of the Blandair Foundation has been organized to provide research, demonstrations, guidance, and publications concerning such issues. Under the direction of Dr. Aelred D. Geis, research already is being performed on a modest scale at a near-by 20 acre site on which Dr. Geis has performed research and product evaluation for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and private companies since 1956. We are seeking more opportunities to improve the quality of human life as additional areas become available.

Blandair Farm is in the middle of an urbanized area of Maryland. There are deer, foxes, smaller wild animals, and many species of birds on the farm. In addition, there are streams and wetlands, as well as dry areas. The extensive natural areas planned for Blandair would be ideal for research sites and land management demonstrations.
