The Elizabeth C. Smith Memorial Garden

Concept Plan for Contemplative Garden at Blandair

The Blandair Foundation has received permission from the University of Cincinnati to replicate a uniquely-designed sundial and from the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks to install it on a granite base at Blandair in memory of Elizabeth C. Smith.  Using an improved scale, a visitor will be able to set the instrument manually and read “Blandair Solar Time” directly to the minute, estimating the fraction of a minute – quite a feat!  Made by the renowned bronze artisan, Eleftherios Karkadoulias, the replica at Blandair will be only the fourth sundial of this design in existence.  We shall propose the sundial to serve as the centerpiece for a contemplative garden in Blandair Regional Park.

 How does the sundial work?

Having raised $13,200 to commission the sundial, the foundation would like to raise $17,000 for the garden and $4,000 for a maintenance endowment.  Contributions for the garden will be held separately from those for general operations.  If you would like to contribute to this project, please send a check payable to the Blandair Foundation and designate that the contribution is for the “Garden” to:
